The company

Our Purpose is to inspire people to live an active life. It drives everything we do and we are obsessed with achieving this.

But how did we get here?

Matthew Bucknall, our Founder and Group CEO, started Virgin Active in 1997 when Sir Richard Branson asked him to research across the globe and create the best health clubs in the world. Matthew opened Virgin Active’s first club in Preston in 1999. A combination of new builds, club acquisitions and strategic club disposals has helped create the Virgin Active of today; a business with over 240 clubs and more than 1.2 million members across eight countries.

We are seeking strong future growth both in the U.K. and internationally. This will continue to create amazing opportunities for our people. Growth will come through the experiences we create in our clubs but also by harnessing the power of digital. As we look to the future, Virgin Active will become a key part of even more members lives as we inspire more and more people to understand the benefits of living an active life.
